MARYLAND — Political leaders across Maryland congratulated Democrat Joe Biden Saturday for winning the U.S. presidency after unofficial election results in Pennsylvania, with its 20 electoral votes, put him over the 270 benchmark needed to win the presidency over President Donald Trump.
Based on the projections by the AP and other news organizations, now President-elect Biden said in a statement he is “honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed” in a ticket that gives America its first woman vice president, 56-year-old Sen. Kamala Harris of California.
Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican who has been a longtime critic of Trump and refused in both election cycles to vote for him, tweeted his congratulations to President-elect Biden.
“Everyone should want our president to succeed because we need our country to succeed,” Hogan said. “We have great challenges ahead of us as a country. Now more than ever, we need to come together as Americans.”
Hogan earlier Saturday told the Associated Press that Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of election tampering and fraud as “dangerous” and “embarrassing.”
“But to just make accusations of the election being stolen and widespread fraud without providing any evidence, I thought was really bad for our democratic process and it was something I had never seen in my lifetime,” Hogan said.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) said: “Congratulations to our future President and Vice President. Americans have sent a clear message in supporting this historic ticket and in the fight for the soul of our nation. Today is a great day for America.”
Second District Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger tweeted: “The people have spoken. I look forward to coming together, I hope, not as Republicans and Democrats, but as Americans.”
Sixth District Rep. David Trone said the peaceful transfer of power from one president to the next is a key to America’s Democracy, the votes have been counted and the conclusion is clear.
“I look forward to working with this administration on the issues that matter most to Marylanders: ending the opioid epidemic, fully funding medical research, prioritizing mental health care, and making our criminal justice system more just,” Trone said. “Our work is just beginning.”
Newly elected Seventh District Congressman Kweisi Mfume congratulated voters on the historic turnout nationwide.
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball lauded Biden and Harris on their historic election victory, and expressed hope for a peaceful transfer of power so the country can move forward.
“Howard County embraces the ideals of inclusion, civility and diversity of thought and identity,” Ball said in a statement. “These ideals have shaped us and made our county one of the best places to live in our nation and the world. It is my sincerest hope that these ideals will guide the decisions of our national leaders as they work to collaborate, heal and unite our country so that we all can have the best opportunity to become our best selves and live our best lives.”
Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said the Biden-Harris team was selected by a diverse coalition from across the nation.
“We congratulate them on a hard-fought election in the midst of a pandemic,” Buckley said in a statement. “They have earned the highest vote total in the history of this country. I know they can look forward to governing and healing our nation. I personally believe that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the right people at the right time.”
While Eighth District Rep. Jaimie Raskin hasn’t yet commented on the Biden win, he earlier bashed Trump for sowing doubt about the election process.
“President’s kitchen-sink full of lies and dark fantasies fools no one,” Raskin tweeted Thursday. “There are no credible reports of electoral fraud in any state, but Trump continues to pump poison into public discourse and tries to set electoral Reichstag fires. Stand strong, America.”
