This past summer, Oregon State student-athletes launched a campaign called ‘Dam Change.’ It was in response to the Black Lives Matter campaign bringing awareness to social injustice in this country.

According to the website, Dam Change is a platform that will educate, empower, and enhance the experience of Black student-athletes and staff. It will also assist in helping the athletics community and beyond to be more aware of the issues that exist.

Oregon State volleyball player Nya Buckner joined Joslyn Tinkle on the latest Talkin’ Beavers Podcast to explain more on the origins of Dam Change and its importance.

“Dam Change is our anti-racism and social justice awareness campaign that we launched last summer,” said Buckner. “And we really focus on bringing education, awareness, engagement and action to Corvallis [Oregon]. We hold forums for people to come and talk about their experiences and to listen to one another and to learn from one another.

It really just means empowering the Black student-athlete, Black faculty, Black staff and just giving them a voice and creating an area for people to come together and find solutions.

Buckner goes on to explain the support Dam Change has received from Oregon State University including President F. King Alexander too, her volleyball teammates as well as other fellow student-athletes.
