On India Upfront, Rahul Shivshankar discusses the COVID racism which is now becoming a cause of concern for the common men. The state governments have now imposed stricter rules and guidelines in the wake of the second wave of COVID-19 in India. Weekend lockdowns and night curfews have also been put in place in several of the worst-affected cities. But while the governments expect the common man to pay a fine after flouting COVID norms, the politicians and celebrities, who should lead by example are finding a narrow escape from all this. The politicians and the celebrities are very comfortably flouting the COVID norms and are definitely leading by their example in the wrong way. The price of flouting COVID norms is being paid by the common men, wherein they are beaten black and blue in the middle of the road or are charged with hefty fines. But why aren’t the same rules being applied to the celebrities and the VVIPs in the country? EC should have either severely penalised all these political parties, politicians or cancelled elections, says Author Anand Ranganathan.
