The West abandons meritocracy at its peril | Comment

The meritocratic idea is so fundamental to modern societies that we take it for granted. We expect to be judged on our individual abilities when we apply for a job rather than on our family connections. And we are outraged at the mere smell of nepotism or favouritism or discrimination.

Yet taking something so fundamental to the health of our society for granted is the height of folly. Look into your own soul and you can see how unnatural meritocracy is: humans are biologically programmed to favour their kith and kin over strangers. Look around at the world and you can see how common corruption and favouritism still are. And if you look at Britain’s history you can see that meritocracy is a relatively late
