Trump speech news live: Ex-president to address Republicans in North Carolina

Former Pres. Trump To Speak At N.C. GOP Convention

Donald Trump gave a rare speech to the Republican Party of North Carolina’s annual convention on Saturday evening.

The former president appeared at the event in Greenville, North Carolina, as he has reportedly been telling friends to push the idea he will be back in the White House in August.

During the speech Mr Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, announced that she would not run for the state’s US Senate seat.

Ms Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, had been hotly tipped to run for elected office but after she was called up on stage by the former president she revealed she would not run.

“It is no for now, not no forever,” she said as she explained she had a young family to look after instead of entering politics.

Instead, Mr Trump announced that he was endorsing congressman Ted Budd “as your next senator”.

“This is a complete, and total endorsement,” he added.

Mr Trump kicked off his political comeback with a speech at the right-wing Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event in Florida in February.

He is also expected to address a CPAC event in Texas next month, and his aides have talked about him possibly holding rallies in Florida, Georgia and Ohio over the summer.

G7 tax deal ‘sets bar far too low’, say campaigners

A “historic” agreement by G7 leaders that aims to force internet giants to pay more tax sets the bar far too low, campaigners have warned.

Finance ministers from the group of seven wealthy nations struck a deal to establish a minimum global corporation tax of at least 15 per cent to prevent tax dodging by multinationals that book profits in low-rate countries as part of talks in London on Saturday.
