Here in Glasgow, we are enjoying a summer not only unusually warm but also strangely Elizabethan. Two weeks ago, the royal Rolls-Royce was spotted trundling past the tanning salons on Maryhill Road as it conveyed the Queen to the North Kelvin Meadow community green space. This week, the UK government trade secretary, Liz Truss, pitched up at Clydeside Distillery before launching the Board of Trade’s green trade report at the Trades Hall of Glasgow.

At the distillery it was very much a case of hurrah for tariff-free whisky trade with Australia, which has a population of 25 million, and don’t mention the post-Brexit export issues that have complicated access to an EU market 18 times that size.

The same kind of wilful doublethink is required
