Texas Tech EP Will Give Pfizer Shot To People Who Got J&J Vaccine

On Monday morning the Food and Drug Administration gave full approval to the Pfizer vaccine, and according to the FDA the vaccine will now be marketed under the name Comirnaty. It will now be able to used with full approval for people 16 years of age and older and still has emergency use authorization for people ages 12 to 15 years old. The Pfizer vaccine will be used this weekend by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso in a way that is not authorized by the Centers for Disease Control. They will be giving it to immunocompromised people who have had the Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines.

Officials at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso say they will be giving the Pfizer vaccine as a booster to immunocompromised people and that “The science is going to be very conclusive that with either combination of vaccines they will carry this favorable response.” That response is to boost the response to the initial vaccines for people who are immunocompromised. Pfizer and Moderna are known as mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and can be used interchangeably but the J&J is not an mRNA vaccine but a local infectious diseases expert told a local news station that people in Europe who got the AstraZeneca vaccine which is similar to the J&J vaccine had “remarkable increases in their immunity after they got an MRNA shot.”

If you would like to get the Pfizer booster shot no matter if you have had that one in the past or the Moderna or Johnson and Johnson vaccine, you can sign up by clicking here. You will have to qualify to receive the shot from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso.

The City of El Paso will be offering booster vaccines in late September. We will keep you up to date on when those will be offered.
