Well, that certainly took a turn.
Just when it looked like the Dallas Mavericks and the returning Luka Doncic were about to take a commanding 3-1 series lead vs. the Utah Jazz, missed free throws and a bad final possession cost Dallas. Big time.
With the series now tied 2-2, the Mavs and Jazz will return to Dallas for Game 5. In the meantime, fans and sports pundits had plenty to say about how the Mavs closed on Saturday — or rather, failed to do so, in a 100-99 loss.
Here’s a sample of how Twitter reacted to Game 4 in Salt Lake City:
God I love this Mavericks team

I’m not a big fan of Luka in this fourth quarter basically ignoring everything good the mavericks did in games 2 and 3. mitchell hasn’t had to move off a stationary finney-smith the entire period.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a close up of Mark Cuban’s face when the mavericks lose a game they should have won.
— chris nashawaty (@ChrisNashawaty) April 23, 2022
Well, that stinks. I prefer it when the Mavericks win.

The @dallasmavs took waaaaay too long to get into that last shot.
Just trotted up the floor like they had all the time in world.
If the Mavs blow this series, the final seconds of game four will haunt.
— Vic Lombardi (@VicLombardi) April 23, 2022
That’s a really bad loss for the Mavericks.

Utah’s comeback 100-99 win guarantees a Game 6 back here on Thursday. That is, after what is always a pivotal Game 5 on Monday in Dallas.

The Mavericks haven’t been out of the first round since 2011. They just blew a shot to go up 3-1 after what looked like a dagger Luka step back. It’s a 3 game series with home court advantage now. I’m sick. I just want to see one of the teams I root for get out of the 1st round. pic.twitter.com/1K3IU9ipGT

Well that certainly took a turn
— Scott Bell (@ScottBellDMN) April 23, 2022
Damn Mavs should’ve had that one.
— joshua carraway (@JoshuaCarraway) April 23, 2022
The Mavs were two rimmed-out free throws, one stop, or one basket away from a 3-1 lead with a closeout game at home. Instead, it’s 2-2 and Utah has some life. There is nothing like the playoffs.
— Bobby Karalla (@bobbykaralla) April 23, 2022
Awful loss for the Mavs 😬😬
— Rick Dickson (@rickdicksonreal) April 23, 2022
mavs were +500 after halftime and came two missed FTs away from pulling it off.
— Brandon Caldwell (@_brandoc) April 23, 2022
It took everything going right for the Jazz to win by 1 & avoid going down 3-1. Still feel good about things overall, but the Mavs still have to learn how to close out a series. They had the Clippers on life support last year too until they didn’t.
— Playoff Dalton (@dalton_trigg) April 23, 2022
It probably sounds weird with Luka hitting the big shots down the stretch, but I think the Mavs made a mistake not letting Brunson create.
— Jason Shepherd (@jsnshep) April 23, 2022
Luka played great in his return. Dwight Powell (who I’ve defended as an ok player) cost the Mavs the game with two missed throws late. That loss is on missed free throws late.
— Clint Brakebill (@CBrakebill) April 23, 2022
What a bruuuutal end to that game. Powell chokes hard, then a moronic final play. What a disaster to blow a 4 point lead with that little time left. Gotta be better to advance Mavs.
