Maharashtra reported 165 fresh coronavirus cases on Thursday, a bulk of them in Mumbai, while two more patients succumbed to the infection in the state, the health department said. With this, the state’s Covid-19 tally rose to 78,77,429, while the death toll increased to 1,47,840, the department said. In Chennai, Twenty-six more people tested positive for Covid-19 at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, taking to 171 the total number of people who have contracted coronavirus since an infection was detected at the Bhandra hostel on April 19.
In a separate development, Beijing is closing all city schools in a further tightening of COVID-19 restrictions, as China’s capital seeks to prevent a wider outbreak. The city of 21 million has already ordered three rounds of mass testing this week, with the third coming on Friday. On Thursday, the city’s Education Bureau ordered all schools to end classes from Friday and said it hadn’t determined when they would resume, AP reported.
Stricter pandemic policy measures – often implemented by countries that tried to control, rather than eliminate Covid-19 – are associated with slightly worse mental health, according to two new studies published in The Lancet Public Health journal.
Mental health impacts associated with lockdowns were worse for women and women living in households with dependent children when compared to men of all ages. At the national level, countries that aimed to eliminate community transmission of Covid-19 within their borders (eliminators) experienced fewer deaths and equivalent or better mental health trends during the pandemic than countries that aimed to control, rather than eliminate, transmission (mitigators).
The extreme heat in the city coupled with the ongoing spike in the number of Covid cases has led to schools in Delhi reducing outdoor activities for students.
Schools in the national capital have been functioning completely in the offline mode and in full capacity since April 1. However, in less than a month, the city is experiencing both — extreme heat conditions, with a maximum temperature well above 40 degrees Celsius being recorded persistently, and a spike in Covid cases, with the city recording 1,000 cases and above for the last week. These conditions are pushing students into their classrooms, and reducing their time outdoors.
