A row erupted between two neighbours after one of them started hanging their washing in the other’s garden. In a bizarre tale, even the erection of a fence did not stop the issue.
An anonymous woman wrote in a post on Mumsnet that the gardens were open plan, but were “clearly defined” all the same. As the weather got warmer, she first noticed that her neighbour’s children had started playing on her side of the garden, reports the Mirror.
She said she “let it slide”, but then the encroachment developed into laundry as well. She wrote: “One morning I get up to hang out washing and see neighbour’s washing already out on my drying green.
“Was a bit WTF about it, mentioned to her and she had always just used our drying green because her poles had broken and the previous owner didn’t mind. I did mind, and told her so. It didn’t stop and we eventually put up a fence.”
The problem, continued, though, despite the new demarcation. The woman claims the children broke the gate to the fence and while it was broken, the neighbour started coming into her garden again and hanging up her washing.
The fence just got fixed, but the neighbour has now drilled holes into it and strung up washing lines stretching across the garden. So now she wants to ask her neighbour to remove the screws, as she didn’t ask to put them up in the first place, but she’s not sure if she’s being unreasonable.
“I realise I may be overreacting and it’s just a fence, but AIBU to want to ask her to remove the screws as she didn’t ask to drill into it? If she had asked, I’d likely have said no because I’m not keen on the persistent weight pulling on the fence,” she added.
More than 100 people responded to the woman’s post, with many agreeing the neighbour had no right to mess with the fence.
One person said: “She has no legal right to attach anything to a fence that you own which is entirely on your land. It’s your fence and you can ask her to remove the line from it.”
