Bullfighting in French town creates angry protests across political divide | World

Demonstrators marched against bullfighting in towns across southwestern France at the weekend as MPs mounted a new effort to ban a bloodsport that is still popular in some areas despite a court ruling that it constitutes cruelty to animals. It remains legal on the grounds that it is a local tradition.

A spokesman for the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, which organised a protest in Bayonne, in the Basque country, said: “Killing animals by making them suffer for entertainment is pure barbarity.”

The protesters voiced their anger over news that the local council had paid €800,000 for the 40 bulls that will be killed this week and to pay the bullfighters’ wages.
