Lincoln Project Video on Clarence and Ginni Thomas Viewed Over 500K Times

A Lincoln Project video calling on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from cases involving the January 6 Capitol riot has been viewed more than half a million times as of Saturday afternoon, following its release on Friday.

Justice Thomas has faced pressure to recuse himself from such cases since reports outlining the role that his wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, played in attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Text messages she allegedly sent to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows showed her expressing support for overturning the election, based on unproven claims of voter fraud.

“Help This Great President stand firm, Mark!!!…You are the leader, with him, who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the Left is attempting the greatest Heist of our History,” she wrote in a November 10 text message.

The Lincoln Project video calls attention to Justice Thomas being the only Supreme Court Justice to vote in favor of former President Donald Trump in a case in which he requested to block investigators from getting access to text messages from Trump administration officials—with the former president claiming executive privilege.

“Thomas did not hide that he was willing to grant Trump’s request for secrecy,” the video narration says. “But it wasn’t just to protect Trump and his conspirators. It was to protect his wife, Ginni Thomas.”

The video, set to ominous music and images of the violent riot, says that the congressional commission investigating the events cannot do their job “if one of the most powerful men in the county is using his seat to protect his best friend.”

“Clarence Thomas must recuse himself because he took an oath to protect the Constitution. Not his wife,” the video says.

The Lincoln Project consists of anti-Trump Republicans who have condemned his handling of the 2020 election. They are not the only ones to call for Justice Thomas to recuse himself from Jan. 6 cases.

Dozens of Democratic leaders and lawmakers have said he should recuse himself, with some suggesting he could be impeached.

“Clarence Thomas should resign,” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, tweeted on Tuesday. “If not, his failure to disclose income from right-wing organizations, recuse himself from matters involving his wife, and his vote to block the Jan 6th commission from key information must be investigated and could serve as grounds for impeachment.”

Meanwhile, nearly 150,000 people signed a petition this week calling on his impeachment.

Anti-Trump GOP lawmakers Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, the only two Republicans on the commission, have not called for his recusal.

Newsweek reached out to the Supreme Court for comment Saturday afternoon. This story will be updated with any response.
