Unless you’ve been burrowed beneath a sunny canopy with no reception over the holidays (fair), then you’ll no doubt have heard about the wild conspiracy theories circling Britney Spears—or the lack thereof—right now.
To catch you up, a slew of videos theorising the real whereabouts of Britney Spears began flooding TikTok in late 2022. Some claimed she had died, others claimed she was using body doubles, and some alleged she was using a green screen to make it look like she was going about her business as usual.
How did the Britney Spears conspiracy theories start?
In late 2022, avid fans and followers of the #FreeBritney movement noticed that the singer was posting photos and videos to Instagram noticeably less frequently. Moreover, paparazzi shots of the singer were all but inexistent. Things became more curious when Spears said she was on a private jet heading to New York—yet no fan photos or paparazzi shots ever surfaced.
“Britney Spears isn’t missing, in trouble or dead as growing fan theories might suggest—in fact, it’s quite the opposite,” they explained.
But that didn’t stop TikTok users from taking an inch and running a mile with the alternatives.
Is Britney actually dead or missing like the conspiracies suggest?
It’s safe to say that there is currently no substantial evidence to prove that Spears is dead or missing.
To add fuel to the fire, gossip icon Perez Hilton shared a video in December where he confirmed that fans concerns were “warranted” and that “things are bad”, but that none of the theories were on the right track.
“Your concern is warranted, but when the truth comes out you will all be surprised,” he explained.
“A lot of fans would not take it well if I said what has been reported about her. But especially if I shared what I know, I don’t think I would help Britney. If I spoke, I would hurt her.
He added that the singer was “not okay”, and that this was “important to understand”.
“First, she’s not okay, second you guys are not crazy, third almost all conspiracy theories are crazy.”
Photoshopping conspiracies
In a final twist, one of the conspiracies claiming that Britney was being photoshopped not only into her own pictures, but into posts shared by her famous friends was debunked by Paris Hilton herself.
“It’s really strange how half the necklace chains are missing in the photo with Britney. And what’s wrong with her fingers?” One wrote.
“Is that an AI Britney?? Look at her fingers!!! WTF Paris?” another added.
Clearly disturbed by the comments, Hilton added in her own two cents by replying: “To all of those asking. Some of these photos were taken on an iPhone so they ended up being blurry,” she explained.
“So they used this app called Remini to make it look unblurry and sometimes the Ai distorts images. Didn’t want to even dignify this with a response. But some of these conspiracy theories are absolutely ridiculous🤦🏼♀️.”
Spears herself is yet to comment on the photoshop accusations, as well as any of the conspiracies. She has also disabled comments on her own Instagram so it’s highly unlikely that she’ll be sharing any insight there.
