New Delhi: The cleanliness of the Yamuna river, or its lack thereof, has long been a matter of political discussion and debate.
On Wednesday, Congress’s Delhi unit tweeted a photograph of the river, tainted with garbage and sewage, and captioned it: “BJP and AAP have been using the Yamuna to their political advantage for years, but no one has done the work.”

The post has over 1,000 views and was reshared by a host of Twitter users associated with the Congress. The party’s Delhi unit also shared the image on its Facebook page.
A survey by the Central Pollution Control Board recently found that textile units in Haryana are responsible for 70 per cent of pollution in the Yamuna, and has written letters to both the AAP and central governments seeking answers on the matter.
Using the image, the Congress attacks both parties on their ostensible negligence of the Yamuna river, which accounts for about 70 per cent of Delhi’s water supply.
The image, however, is from 2013 when the Congress government was in power in Delhi, under stalwart chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
It was originally shared by the Aaj Tak channel in February 2013, during the last eight months of Dikshit’s tenure. In December that year, Aam Aadmi Party Chief Arvind Kejriwal was elected to power.
