Reports of Twitter outages were spiking this afternoon. Less than an hour later, Twitter said the platform ‘should now be working as normal.’
Twitter outages spiked Monday due to an “internal change,” according the social media giant, with tens-of-thousands of users reporting Twitter outages from Seattle to Boston.
“Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now,” said Twitter’s Support on the social media platform at 12:19 p.m. ET today. “We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences.”
There were over 8,300 reports of Twitter outages at 12:07 p.m. ET alone today, according to Downdetector. Several of the largest cities in the U.S. were hot spots for outages this afternoon including Seattle, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City and Boston.

Some Twitter users experienced issues trying to log in as well as when attempting to share tweets. Reported Twitter outages began spiking around 11:30amET today across the country.
“We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s fixed,” said Twitter on its Twitter Support page.

At 1:05 p.m. ET, Twitter said “things should be working as normal. Thanks for sticking with us!”
Twitter did not immediately respond to comment by press time. Twitter CEO Elon Musk said later in response to a tweet from venture capitalist Marc Andreessen that “a small API change had massive ramifications. The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite.”

Twitter Declines To Pay AWS Bill: Report
The Twitter outage follows a recent report by The Information saying the social media giant has refused to pay its Amazon Web Services bills for months.
AWS is the cloud business of Amazon and is the worldwide market share leader in cloud computing.
The Information reports that Twitter still has around $70 million in outstanding bills to AWS. Twitter and AWS signed a five-and-a-half year contract in 2020 that required Twitter to pay $510 million to leverage AWS cloud infrastructure and services.
AWS did not immediately respond to comment by press time regarding Twitter.
Last week, Twitter was hit by another massive outage when worldwide users reported having issues using the mobile application and websites.
