Shannen Doherty has officially filed for divorce from her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, after 11 years of marriage, according to documents obtained by TMZ on Friday.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 actress, 52, who recently celebrated her birthday earlier last week on April 12, cited in the papers that both she and the photographer have been separated since January of this year.
The former couple initially said ‘I do’ back in 2011, and did not welcome any children during the course of their relationship. Her marriage to Kurt was her third, having previously tied the knot with Ashley Hamilton and then Rick Salomon.
The representative of The Hollywood star, Leslie Sloane, expressed to the outlet that, ‘Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted. Unfortunately, she felt she was left with no other option.’
Doherty, who recently reunited with her Charmed co-stars last month in March, has been battling breast cancer since it returned in 2020 as stage four.
Sloane then added to TMZ that the outlet could reach out to Kurt’s agent, ‘Collier Grimm at PICTUREKID,’ due to her being ‘intimately involved,’ hinting that she may have had some involvement in the separation.
Separate sources close to Shannen and Kurt explained to the outlet that the actress is ‘not well’ in regards to her health and added that their divorce is far from amicable, and instead is bitter and ‘very acrimonious.’
Also in the documents obtained by TMZ, Doherty has asked for spousal support but requested that it not be awarded to the photographer.
Before her marriage to Kurt, the star had tied the knot with Ashley Hamilton in 1993 until their divorce was finalized the following year in 1994. She later said ‘I do’ to Rick Salomon in 2002, but their marriage was annulled nine months later in 2003.
In February 2020, it was revealed that the actress had been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer after going into remission from the illness back in 2017.
During a past interview with People in 2019, the Little House On The Prairie star opened up about how her cancer battle had actually made their relationship stronger.
‘Cancer solidified us,’ Shannen gushed to the publication at the time. ‘Kurt and I have a much deeper appreciation for each other now.’
In 2015, the actress had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and had a mastectomy, as well as undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation, which had led her to remission in 2017. But in 2020, the cancer had returned.
She further explained, ‘It’s not that our marriage wasn’t good before. But we were definitely going through some growing pains,’ and added, ‘We would lock horns on things, and instead of resolving it, we wouldn’t speak for a couple of days.’
The actress then stated that at the time, ‘we don’t let a night go by mad at each other,’ and revealed, ‘The last time we had a big argument was pre-cancer.’
Shannen expressed that cancer not only affects the ‘person with cancer’ but also ‘the people in your life. And it’s shaped both of us. We look at life very differently now.’
The star commented on her now-estranged husband’s support at the time, stating, ‘I don’t have to be a sexy little vixen. How Kurt sees me really helps me be a better person. He was always like, ‘I’ve never seen someone handle something so difficult with so much grace. You’re so strong.’
The BH90210 actress gushed, ‘Kurt and I look at each other with such profound respect now. He was my rock in every way possible, and he made sure I knew how much he loved and valued me.’
‘We have a much deeper appreciation [for each other] now, and a much larger capacity for forgiveness.’
Later in 2021, while promoting her film, List Of A Lifetime, Shannen explained to People that her cancel battle is, ‘part of life at this point,’ and referenced to her now-estranged husband.
‘My husband says that you would never know that I have cancer. I never really complain. I don’t really talk about it. It’s part of life at this point.’
The former couple officially tied the knot during a romantic sunset ceremony in Malibu in October 2011.
Shortly before news of her divorce came to light, Doherty celebrated her 52nd birthday earlier last week on April 12.
Her close friend and fellow actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, paid a special tribute to the star on her main Instagram page, as well as uploading an assortment of snaps of the two together.
‘It’s your birthday @theshando so in honor of you, here is a slideshow of some of more ridiculous stunts (swipe right) Any suggestions for new ones?’ the Cruel Intentions star penned in the caption.
Shannen sweetly responded in the comment section, and humorously typed, ‘we sure are drinking a lot in these photos!! I love you S!!’
