EL CERRITO — Police have arrested a 21-year-old Oakland resident in connection with a fatal shooting on April 23, authorities said Friday.
Malachi Cox was arrested Wednesday in Citrus Heights in the killing of 18-year-old Sincere Martin, a former De Anza High and El Cerrito High school football player.
Martin was fatally shot about 4:30 p.m. April 23 in the 900 block of Galvin Drive, an area where police said he had been visiting people he knew.
Police have not released a motive for the killing or said if the two men knew each other.
Police did say in a release that Cox is associated with a 4-door white Toyota that was seen fleeing westbound on Stockton Avenue from Galvin Drive after the shooting.
Police have not said exactly how they traced Cox to Citrus Heights in Sacramento County.
But they did credit the Oakland Police Department Ceasefire and Intelligence units and U.S. Marshals in helping locate him.
Cox has been booked at the Martinez Detention Facility and is being held without bail.
The killing was the first homicide in El Cerrito since Jan. 31, 2022.
