A Jetstar passenger’s desperate attempt to dodge a $65 extra luggage fee has been praised online, with many viewers comparing her travel ‘hack’ to a scene straight out of a sitcom.
The woman, named by other media outlets as Adriana Ocampo, was travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide with friend Emily Altamura earlier this month when an airline scale revealed her carry on bag and tote weighed 12.89kg — almost double the 7kg allowed with each ticket.
But instead of coughing up the $65 for the fine for exceeding Jetstar’s restrictions, the 19-year-old Aussie and Emily, whose bag was also over the limit, took matters into their own hands.
Woman layers on almost 6kg
In her viral TikTok, Ms Ocampo can be seen cracking up laughing as the pair open up their suitcases to sort their belongings, which can then be seen strewn all over the floor.
In a frantic attempt to lighten the load, the girls begin putting on numerous jumpers and jackets, with Adriana attempting to layer on almost 6kg. “I give up,” she captions the footage when she returns to weigh her luggage for the second time, only for it to still be over the limit at 8.3kg.
The friends leave the line again and continue to try and shuffle their items around, with Adriana appearing to stuff more clothing in her baggy pants and under her coat.
“Ok, so this is what my luggage is looking like,” she says, filming her bag with a pair of jeans, a handbag and handful of other belongings inside. “And this is what I’m looking like,” she adds before bursting out laughing and standing back from the camera to show the impressive amount of clothing stacked on her frame.
Passengers still forced to pay fine
Just moments before boarding the plane, the 19-year-old revealed she had been forced to shove her iPad down her pants to hide it. “This one is just going to have to be — I’m dead on. This is how I’m going on the plane. I’m in tears,” she revealed, saying everyone in the airport was “staring” at them.
However, despite their best efforts, the obviously annoyed passengers said they ended up having to pay the $65 to board the flight, which had been rescheduled after their earlier one was cancelled.
The TikTok has attracted hundreds of thousands of likes, with viewers describing it as “too good” and the “funniest thing” they had seen.
“I fly Jetstar a lot and I never not stress over this. I always hide my 2kg laptop under a jacket on the floor when they come around to weigh in,” one woman wrote. Numerous others said the clip reminded them of the episode of Friends where Joey puts on all of Chandler’s clothes.
Jetstar responds to viral video
Jetstar themselves even commented on the clip. “While we certainly see the funny side, we have limits to carry-on to make it fair for everyone,” a spokesperson said, according to The Pedestrian.
“Keeping track of how much baggage passengers bring on board means everyone has room for their belongings, and we’re meeting our safety requirements.”
