Sheffield continued its winning ways over the weekend, coming out of the Brockway Volleyball Tournament holding the championship trophy after defeating Port Allegany 25-16, 25-19.

The Saturday of success started off with a couple splits. Sheffield won the first set against Cameron County 25-15 yet dropped the second 22-25. The Wolverines would lose by the same score in the first set against Brookville but were able to pull off a 25-21 win in the second. Sheffield went on to sweep Dubois Central Catholic 25-11, 25-23.

“We had a bit of a slow start in the morning, but they all sort of woke up at noon when we played D.C.C.,” said Sheffield head coach Melissa Lemay. “They knew that they needed to win both sets to be seeded one from our pool. They all played outstanding defense in the finals.”

As the No. 1 seed, Sheffield easily handled Union 25-7, then overtook the hosting team Brockway 25-16, before facing off with the Gators.

While Port continued to tip the ball to try to find the floor, we were hammering it — from the right side, outside, and middle,” said Lemay. “Kassidy (Orinko) had 19 attack attempts in the finals and generated 14 kills. The team passing — digging was amazing allowing Kadence (Steffan) to set to all three spots, and they were swinging.”

The Wolverines will play a couple of road games this week, traveling to Cameron County on Tuesday and Elk County Catholic on Thursday.

It starts at practice tomorrow,” Lemay said of the upcoming road games. “We will review the things we did well over the weekend and the things that we need to work on to prepare for Cameron County and E.C.C. C.C. was in our pool Saturday, so there won’t be a ton of surprises there. E.C.C. is always tough, so we will continue to stay focused. One match at a time.”
