Temu, a rapidly growing Chinese e-commerce platform, is at the center of a heated controversy as it prepares to air an advertisement during the Super Bowl. Eleven Republican lawmakers have called on CBS and Paramount Global to refrain from broadcasting Temu’s commercial, citing allegations of forced labor and espionage.

The Super Bowl Showdown

Temu’s Super Bowl ad last year catapulted the company into the limelight, with its low-cost offerings resonating with a broad audience. The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, enacted in 2021, aims to prevent products made using forced labor in the Xinjiang region of China from entering the United States. The lawmakers argue that Temu’s continued lack of compliance with the UFLPA guarantees that products made with forced labor are infiltrating the US market.

Unlike other companies, such as Shein, Temu has not provided data on its efforts to combat forced labor or published audit results detailing the presence of banned cotton in its clothing. The lack of transparency has raised concerns among lawmakers and consumers alike.

Temu, along with other apparel retailers, has been under congressional investigation since May. The lawmakers contend that allowing Temu’s ad to air during the Super Bowl would be a victory for the Chinese Communist Party and a blow to US values.

“Allowing Temu to advertise during the Super Bowl would be a win for the Chinese Communist Party against the American people,” said Representative Chris Smith, one of the lawmakers leading the charge. “American consumers should not be unwittingly supporting companies that profit from forced labor.”

Temu has yet to publicly address the allegations and the ongoing congressional investigation. As the Super Bowl approaches, the company finds itself in a precarious position, with its advertising plans hanging in the balance.
