LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Over 8 million Americans rely on insulin. On Monday, Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, was in the area to discuss how the Inflation Reduction Act helped lower insulin costs for Ohioans on Medicare, as well as talk about his push to lower the cost for all Americans.

Brown was joined by Cass and Mike Heinzer, who are among those struggling to pay for it, paying $1,000 a month for insulin medicine.

“Thought about cutting the dosage,” Cass said.

“You take half doses, things like that, which isn’t good either,” Mike said.

The Inflation Reduction Act, which went into effect 15 months ago, capped the price at $35 a month for those on Medicare.

Senator Brown claims insulin is simple and cheap for drug companies at $10 a vial.

“They’re still making money at $35. They’re just not making as much as when they charged more,” he said.

The law also caps out-of-pocket costs at $3,300 this year and drops to $2,000 next year. Sen. Brown would like to see drug costs lowered on more medicines.

The VA gets cheaper costs by negotiating on the 10 most commonly prescribed drugs. Cass Heinzer would welcome that because she takes other medicines besides insulin.

“And I’m getting too old to get a job, so I don’t know what we’re gonna do if this continues,” she said.

Pharmacist Ray Carlson, of RC Compounding, believes it is time to remove the control that three PBMs (pharmacy benefits managers) have by controlling 85% of the prescriptions filled in this country.

“And shake to the ground some of those who foolishly think that we will continue to tolerate having to call a 1-800 number in order to get a few months’ worth of free medication,” Carlson said.

Capping the insulin price for people on Medicare was included in the Inflation Reduction Act, but it would be up to Congress to act if the lower costs and capped costs were to be extended to other drugs.
