Sonthiya Sawasdee, a former advisor to the Parliamentary Commission on Law, Justice, and Human Rights, has lodged a complaint against Udom Taepanich, famously known as Nose, over his Netflix stand-up comedy special named Diew Special Super Soft Power. Sawasdee alleges that the content of the program might contain misleading content on Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy philosophy.

The Netflix special, streamed to its 91 million subscribers, is being scrutinized over concerns it might misrepresent the Thai economic philosophy. On May 6, Sawasdee formally presented his complaint to the Metropolitan Police Bureau Commander, Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, requesting an investigation into Udom’s performance.

His main concerns were the authenticity of Udom’s information, its alignment with the Thai economic approach, and the potential impact of the misinformation on public understanding of this economic principle.

The Sufficiency Economy philosophy, integral to Thai culture, encourages moderation, prudence, and self-immunity for sustainable development. Sawasdee is keen on whether Nose’s comic delivery might have distorted the essence of this philosophy in his Netflix show.

Sawasdee’s complaint is prompted by the thought that Udom might have made a mockery of the philosophy for entertainment value. The probe he’s requested hopes to establish if Udom discussed the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, if his content was doctored for humor, and if such distorting information could cause public misunderstanding.

Udom, famous for his comic touch, perhaps didn’t foresee that his program would cause such intense reaction. His show, attracting millions of Netflix viewers, is critically analyzed for its adherence to Thai values.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau has not yet commented on the issue. This situation underscores the thin line between freedom of speech and respect for culture in a country where entertainment and educational content often merge.

The investigation will reveal if Udom’s content was a harmless joke or an insult to a respected national principle, according to Khaosod.
