WASHINGTON (TND) — Comedian Bill Maher criticized “woke” individuals for placing an emphasis on race Saturday, even likening the actions to those of an extremist White supremacist group.
While speaking on an episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Maher argued that “liberal is a different animal than woke.”
“You can be woke, with all the nonsense that that now implies, but don’t say that somehow it’s an extension of liberalism,” Maher told host Joe Rogan.
“I have always believed, as liberals do, in a color-blind society. The goal is to not see race at all anywhere for any reason,” Maher continued. “The woke believe race is first and foremost the thing you should always see everywhere, which I find interesting because that used to be the position of the Ku Klux Klan.”

The comments came as part of a discussion about the way American liberalism has developed since the 1990s. During the conversation, Maher said he feels divorced from the modern political left because of a recent shift in party norms.
Rogan also compared Maher to “a 90s liberal back when they were more reasonable, before they became leftists.” Maher agreed, noting that Democrats “should be” worried about his failure to fully align with the party.
Maher has repeatedly made stances against his fellow Democrats. Last month, he reportedlyblastedDemocrat-run cities on his “Club Random” podcast for allowing homeless individuals to set up tents in streets.
Maher also sided with 80% of U.S. adults who said President Joe Biden’s age should disqualify him from running for a second term, saying “again, [Biden’s] competency worries me more than ideology.”
