Ernest Harden Jr. has spent more than five decades building a career largely away from the spotlight. On Sunday, that long journey reached a milestone when the 73-year-old actor won his first Emmy for his performance as Louie Cloverfield on HBO Max’s “The Pitt.”

Harden won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys, defeating nominees including Colman Domingo, Jeff Hiller, Jeff Kober, Jonathan Pryce and Bradley Whitford. Harden began working in film and television in the 1970s, making his first credited film appearance in “Three Days of the Condor,” released in 1975.

He later appeared in the Norman Lear sitcom “The Jeffersons” and took on a leading role opposite legendary actress Bette Davis in the 1980 television movie “White Mama”. Decades later, “The Pitt” provided Harden with one of the most prominent roles of his career. His character, Louie Cloverfield, was a recurring emergency-room patient whose deteriorating health became one of the show’s emotional storylines.

Harden received the Emmy for the episode “7:00 A.M.,” which depicted Louie’s final chapter. Accepting the award, Harden dedicated the honor to Davis, who had received an Emmy nomination for “White Mama” but did not win. “We didn’t make it then but this one is for us!”

Announcement

Backstage, Ernest Harden Jr. described receiving the Emmy as surreal. “I am on cloud 25.” He also credited “The Pitt” executive producers, including John Wells and star Noah Wyle, for giving him the opportunity.
