Indian space technology startup Pixxel has raised $100 million in a Series C funding round, giving the company fresh capital to expand beyond hyperspectral Earth observation. The investment will support new sensing technologies, advanced software and sovereign space systems as Pixxel broadens its ambitions for space-based infrastructure.
The Bengaluru-based company said the funding would accelerate plans to build what it describes as “planetary infrastructure”. The concept involves a network of space-based technologies and intelligence systems designed to provide a deeper understanding of Earth.
Pixxel Expands Beyond Hyperspectral Satellites
The Series C round was led by Temasek and Seraphim Space, with existing investors also increasing their commitments. New investors, including 360 ONE Asset and IMM Invest, participated in the round.
Pixxel was founded seven years ago by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal while they were still students. The company initially focused on building a fleet of hyperspectral satellites.
Ahmed described the original ambition as creating a “health monitor for the entire planet” through space-based observation.
Hyperspectral satellites capture information across hundreds of narrow spectral bands. As a result, they can help scientists and governments detect changes and characteristics on Earth that conventional satellite imagery may not reveal.
Startup Builds Space Technology Portfolio
Over the past few years, Pixxel has emerged as one of India’s prominent private space companies. The startup has launched what it says are the world’s highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral satellites.
The company has also worked with organisations including NASA, the US National Reconnaissance Office and the Indian Air Force. In addition, Pixxel has secured contracts linked to sovereign space systems.
Ahmed said the latest funding would allow the company to “move faster and aim higher”. However, he described the investment as only the beginning of Pixxel’s next phase of growth.
The company now plans to expand into new sensing technologies and more powerful Earth intelligence software. It also aims to develop sovereign space infrastructure.
Pixxel Targets Broader Earth Intelligence
Pixxel’s strategy is increasingly focused on combining persistent sensing from multiple satellite constellations with software that can turn large volumes of Earth observation data into actionable intelligence.
Ahmed said understanding the physical world would become a strategic necessity in the coming decades. He pointed to challenges involving climate, resources, food, energy, infrastructure and national security.
The company’s plans therefore extend beyond operating a hyperspectral satellite constellation. Pixxel wants to build broader space-based infrastructure that can help governments, businesses and institutions continuously monitor the planet.
Funding Boosts India’s Private Space Sector
The new investment comes as India’s private space sector continues to expand following reforms that opened more opportunities for startups and industry participation.
For Pixxel, the $100 million funding round marks a significant step towards a broader technology portfolio. The company will now seek to develop new sensing capabilities, expand its software systems and build sovereign space infrastructure.
The next phase will test Pixxel’s ability to translate its vision into a larger constellation of technologies. At the same time, the startup’s expansion could strengthen India’s presence in the rapidly growing global space economy.
