During the August 19 episode of her podcast, “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,” the former first lady sat down with Mary J. Blige and said, “Well, there’s just so much focus on, for women, finding a man, you know,” she said.
Blige then responded, “Yeah, females…it’s our dream to be rescued.”
“Or to be chosen,” Michelle said. “And so we’re always working on us, not for us, but to be chosen.”

“And that’s where we mess up at,” Blige said. “For so many years, you’re working on yourself to be chosen by someone else. I’m working on myself to be chosen by me. Like, it’s all about me right now. And it’s gonna continue to be. And this is work every single day. I gotta make sure that I can sleep at night before I can, you know…”
“Sleep with somebody else,” Michelle said, to which Blige said, “Exactly.”
This is not the first time the Becoming author has been candid about romantic relationships. Back in 2022, she spoke openly about her and her husband Barack Obama’s marriage challenges in an Instagram post.
“Our marriage has never been perfectly 50-50,” she wrote. “One of us is always needing more or giving more. We have to be willing to listen to each other, honestly and without defensiveness. Only then, can we evolve together.”
She also warned about the downsides of “glamorizing” a relationship.

“Over the years, a lot of young people have asked me about marriage. And my response usually goes something like this: You have to prepare yourself for long stretches of discord and discomfort. You have to learn how to make real compromises in the way you’ve lived as an individual.”
She continued, “Glamorizing a relationship while you’re dating will lead you straight to difficulty once you’re married. You can’t paper over problems when you’re living with someone day in and day out.”
