From 2005 to 2016, the 49ers had five different head coaches; enter Kyle Shanahan.
Now in his 10th year as San Francisco’s shot-caller, he’s about to enter uncharted territories in the very near future.
That’s because when the 49ers face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, Shanahan will tie the legendary Bill Walsh for most games coached in franchise history with 166 – including regular and postseason games.
“Bill Walsh is the man, so I didn’t look at it as really being compared to Bill Walsh,” Shanahan told reporters Wednesday. “… I don’t even know if it’s a record or anything, but the thing I just saw before I came in and when it said 166 games, it just made me realize how old I’ve gotten because that’s a lot of games.”
Walsh led the 49ers to three Super Bowl titles during his tenure with San Francisco, which lasted from 1979-88.
Shanahan has gone 93-72 in his 165 games since taking over the job with the 49ers in 2017 and has San Francisco atop the NFC West early into the 2026 NFL season with a 2-0 record.
If the team can earn a win over the Cardinals this weekend, it would be the third time in the last four seasons that Shanahan and the 49ers begin the year 3-0.
