Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday gave a clarion call for making the country’s handloom diversity popular across the world.

In an Instagram reel, he said, “Tomorrow, 7th August is National Handloom Day. Let’s make India’s handloom diversity popular. Share your videos with your favourite handloom products, including GRWM videos on social media. Don’t forget to use #NationalHandloomDay.”

He also urged the people to buy and showcase their favourite handloom products—whether it’s a GRWM (Get Ready With Me) featuring handloom attire, a styling reel, or a story highlighting the beauty of our traditional weaves.

“Every post is a tribute to the skilled artisans who preserve India’s rich cultural heritage,” he said.

Modi also asked the people to amplify the spirit of Vocal for Local, support Indian weavers, and celebrate the fabric that binds India together.

On August 7 in 1905, during the Swadeshi Movement, handwoven cloth stopped being just a household commodity and became a tool of economic resistance.

Choosing local weave over imported textiles was a direct statement of self-reliance and national identity.

“Today, as we advance towards the vision of Aatmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat, that foundational spirit finds expression,” Modi added.
