New feminist history sculpture opens at National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls

SENECA FALLS, NY (WRGB) — Did you know the women’s suffrage movement started right here in New York?

The National Women’s Hall of Fame is located in Seneca Falls, and a new artwork showcases women’s history.

Created by California-based artist and film director Tiffany Shlain, a sculpture called Dendrofemonology: A Feminist History Tree Ring showcases women’s historic achievements in a 30-line tree ring.

The artwork is on display at the museum until September.

Shlain chronicles 50,000 of women’s achievements and struggles from across the globe in the artwork.

The museum is visited by high school and college students, and international tourists.

“I go back 50,000 years when women were worshipped as goddesses in almost every ancient civilization, and that’s a much better place to start the story, and then I show the push and pull of women losing power, gaining power, and then of course in the last several years it’s been hard on women losing their rights in this country,” said Shlain.

The piece has been showcased on the Mall in Washington, D.C., at Madison Square Park in New York, and in St. Louis, Missouri. Its next stop is in Texas.
