Beartooth singer Caleb Shomo is opening up about the difficult process of telling his wife he’s gay.
Shomo, 33, sat down on the “Disrespectfully” podcast after coming out as gay in a social media post in May. He had been married to wife Fleur Shomo since 2012.
On the podcast, the singer reflected on feeling that there was “someone else in there who was the real me,” and he remembered the moment he realized he had to say something about this feeling.
“I was in the shower, trying to talk myself into saying something I had been many times. Thankfully, I kind of smacked myself in the face [and said], ‘It’s … time,'” he said. “And I said something to my then-wife about how I feel about men, and how I’ve never really allowed myself to explore this, but I have to tell you, I can’t not. And it was just a road from there.”
Shomo went on to share he was “terrified” to acknowledge these feelings out loud for the first time.
“I was just bawling my … eyes out, trying so hard to verbalize, and I really struggle to verbalize things,” he said. “I’m a verbal processor, and this is obviously such an intense thing, and I’m feeling so nervous and so scared in this situation that it was really, really difficult to verbalize, and I didn’t verbalize it very well. I tried my best.”
Shomo added that during this conversation, he expressed that “the way that I feel about girls, I feel about guys,” and there’s “something there that I’ve been running from” but “I don’t think I want to run anymore.”
After he did so, “everything starts to make sense, and then I was able to stop hating myself so much, at least in some ways, and start to unpack everything.”
Shomo came out as gay in an Instagram post on May 23. At the time, he shared with fans that he is “a proudly gay man” and wrote that this was “something I’ve been unpacking and reckoning with in my life for quite some time now.”
Shomo was married to his wife Fleur Shomo for 14 years. She addressed the news in her own statement on Instagram, writing that it had been a “very disorienting and hurtful” period for both of them but that she “will always want to love, protect and support Caleb.”
“Our nearly 14yrs of marriage was wonderful and full of so much fun, adventure & love,” she wrote. “Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do. And no one can ever truly know what depths of love exist between two people unless they are those people. I already miss it & my husband more than anything. Our story was a good one. And now it’s done.”
Speaking on the podcast, Shomo said he received a “mixed” reaction after coming out. “Some people are here for it, some people aren’t,” he said.
Shomo founded Beartooth in 2012. The rock band has put out five studio albums, with a new one, “Pure Ecstasy,” set to drop in August.
