Artist Kerry Callen is back with another hilarious piece of fan-made comic art, and this one offers the perfect tongue-in-cheek explanation for why Batman eventually became the brooding, stone-faced Dark Knight we all know today.
Titled “Why Batman Doesn’t Smile,” the comic imagines a lighthearted moment with the Justice League back in the 1980s, where Batman actually lets loose and laughs while telling an absurd story, only for The Flash to snap a photo at the absolute worst moment.
After seeing the less-than-flattering picture, Batman decides that’s enough smiling for one lifetime, declaring “Never again” as the comic jokingly transitions into the era of the grim, dark Caped Crusader.
It’s exactly the kind of clever, playful humor Callen has become known for, and it’s another reminder of why his fan comics are always such a treat whenever they pop up online.
