China’s robotics boom is moving fast. In one recent demonstration, maybe a little too fast.
During events surrounding Beijing’s 2026 World Robot Conference, Unitree drew attention with its new humanoid robot “Superman,” which the company says can reach 12.66 meters per second, faster than Usain Bolt’s peak speed during his world-record sprint. A demonstration ended with the robot failing to stop cleanly and crashing into a cushion, immediately giving the internet its latest piece of robot comedy.
Viewers joked that they had witnessed the first “career-ending injury” in robotic athletics. The clip was funny. The technology behind it is becoming serious business.
China is now pushing aggressively into what the industry calls physical AI, pairing artificial intelligence with machines capable of operating in the real world. The country already dominates industrial robotics. Chinese factories installed roughly 295,000 industrial robots in 2024, more than the rest of the world combined, while domestic companies are rapidly expanding into humanoid models designed for manufacturing, logistics, service work and eventually everyday environments.
The strategy has several forces behind it. China is preparing for a shrinking workforce, while government-backed programs and robot training centers are accelerating development and collecting enormous amounts of real-world movement data. The country also has a manufacturing advantage built through its electric vehicle, battery and drone industries, allowing robotics companies to source components and scale production quickly.
The machines are still learning their limits.
Humanoids capable of sprinting, jumping, boxing and performing coordinated routines have become regular viral attractions. Real-world reliability remains the bigger test, especially when stopping, balance and unexpected environmental changes enter the equation.
That challenge is arriving alongside growing geopolitical pressure. The United States recently moved to block imports of new foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots over national security concerns, placing another major technology sector inside the expanding U.S.-China rivalry.
With the World Humanoid Robot Games set for August 22 through 26, the next generation of robotic athletes will have another chance to show how far the technology has come.
Hopefully, somebody leaves enough room after the finish line.
